Well, I've got seven chapters written.

This makes it, by a long shot, the longest single original fiction I've ever done. And I'm not halfway through yet.

Is it natural for the story to deviate from the outline like this, or is it because I forgot what those items meant when I put them in the outline to begin with?

Stories can go all sorts of ways. If it deviates from the outline, go with it. You might be surprised. And so long as the story still makes sense, it'll work out fine. XD
