A Letter From Somewhere

"My dearest brother:
Truly you must have gone mad. I hear you have demanded that Father grant you use of our family's strongest Names in order to hunt after the murderer of our brother. You have gone so far as to declare it his paternal duty.
Brother, we both love our lost sibling, but let us be honest, the man was a fool.
Yes, a fool. I say this with all the love I can muster. His obsession with what lay outside the Walls drove him to the brink of stupidity, and his willingness to gather outliers to himself like cats sent him past it. Did you not hear his Servant's reports?
Our brother's murderer was one of the outliers he brought into his service. Not to serve as an Ornament, no. He actually trained this one as a Tool. Had one of his other Tools train him with weapons, trusted him with Removals, all of it.
Brother, our mad sibling even entrusted this outlier with a Name. More than that - when he found the outlier had brought a lost Name back into the City with him, he had the Name repaired and gave it back to him.
Now our brother is dead, and the outlier has fled the City, taking both of those Names with him. He also stole a third Name as he departed. And your reaction is to demand we risk more Names, our Tools, and our wealth trying to bring him down?
Brother, think sensibly for once. Our brother got what was coming to him.
If it is any consolation, the outlier was heading for the Rippling Plain. You have heard the stories there. We may never see those Names again, but he will not enjoy his ill-gained freedom.
I am sending this via my strongest streetfoot. They are not as enduring or fast as outliers, but as recent events have proven, they are far more... trustworthy... than the alternative. Make sure she feeds and rests before you send her back.
Signed,
Your dearest brother."
