Thought Stretching: Five Songs
May. 1st, 2012 10:09 pmThis is something new. In order to tease out parts of myself that may have gotten lost at some point, I've decided to ask myself questions and give detailed answers to them.
So here's the first questions: Which five songs do I most want to know how to perform?
1. The Ventures, "Walk Don't Run"
When I was a kid, they used to show ads for classic rock collections on TV. This was back when they still offered them on CD or cassette. Most of the songs were ones I couldn't care less about, but there was always one that got my attention for the five seconds or so they played the excerpt. For some reason I always thought of it as "Run Don't Walk" for the longest damn time...
2. Collective Soul, "December"
I had this song stuck in my head, on and off, for seven years straight. I finally had it identified when I sang a piece of it to my partner in sociology class in high school one day. I have the album now, but that guitar line is still among my favorites.
3. Soundgarden, "Black Hole Sun"
Unlike the first two on the list, this isn't a song that has a connection to my past. I want to know this one because I value its power. It's simply... eerie. One of the most ominous-sounding songs I know. Knowing how to play it might weaken that, but I'd still want to do it.
4. Rush, "YYZ"
As you might have guessed, most of the songs on this list are guitar-based. Particularly in the case of this song - no offense to Neil Peart, but I'll leave the drum section in this song to him. Something about the guitar part to this song touches me on a deep level, and I never get tired of hearing it.
5. "Poem For Everyone's Souls" (Persona series)
The one non-guitar song on the list and the only one from a video game. I want to learn piano. I want to learn it for a lot of reasons, but mainly so that I can play this song. It represents some of the most emotional moments in my video game career, and is frankly one of the best songs I've heard in gaming.
